TUKATA by Claude Estèbe

A solo exhibition of Claude Estèbe
Toot Yung Gallery
3 Sept - 15 Oct 2011
Opening reception 3 Sept starting 7pm

Claude Estèbe is a French scholar in Japanese visual culture. He organized several exhibitions as an independent curator in Japan and Thailand ( including First photographs in Siam, Queen Gallery 2008) or as a photographer. He published The Last Samurais and The Dawn of Geishas. He was fellow artist at French Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 2001 and is now teaching in Paris (University of Oriental Languages) and writing a study about Gojira and Kaiju eiga (Japanese radioactive monsters movies).

No name dolls
This exhibition is about femininity, modernity and economic globalization in Asia. The tiny no name dolls used as models for Claude Estèbe’s photographs are a ghostly testimony of the millions of women working in small Asian factories for the sake of economic development. Unlike Michael Wolf, Claude Estèbe does not concentrate on the accumulation of thousands of toys; he isolates some chosen dolls, which have a sense of mirroring humanity emanating from their defects and astonishing bright pop colors. These toys were never intended for exportation in western nations but aimed for local market. Although they are mass products, these cheap plastic figures are still painted by hand, and their design retains something of their own visual popular culture. In this sense, these no name dolls are somehow fragile and human. Unlike the perfectly cloned copyrighted American fashion dolls with their stereotyped aggressive smile, the very own defectiveness of these petite dolls make them unique.

Divas
The first series focuses on close-up of faces. The thin plastic catches gorgeously the light and the defaults of the materials oddly giving life to the dolls, providing them with a human skin with pores and life marks. In sharp contrast, a unique perfect red smile is painted by an anonymous artist’s hand. The mouth, according to classic Asian esthetic, is small and closed avoiding showing the teeth. As Japanese writer Tanizaki wrote sarcastically in ‘In Praise of the Shadows’, the toothed white smile of Western people echoes the cold hygienic white of sanitary ceramics…

Agent Orange
Claude Estèbe’s work on some dolls echoes the concept of French philosopher Jean Baudrillard in his book “Simulacra and Simulation”. Especially in his series of Agent Orange, the dolls, which are supposedly an alter ego of young girls, a way to identify with a perfect feminine figure, are almost lost in abstraction. The distinction between reality and representation vanishes. When the defaults of mass production go too far the dolls become creepy, with damaged bodies. These dolls have been copied so many times and with such poor material and care that their lack of realism pushes them away in an inhuman shape.

Global fairies
The arrival of the Peak oil dooms the era of cheaply made plastic products. These are already vanishing symbols of the decaying global trade. As natural resources decrease the pollution produced by fossil energies jeopardize the ecologic balance of the planet. Claude Estèbe likes to see the smallest of these dolls, made in Thailand, as trooping fairies of our times, helplessly witnessing the global weather change.

Tukata
Due to mass production constraints, the plastic bodies are dramatically simplified. Nonetheless, they are still oddly seductive and powerful, bringing back pure primitive energy echoing the animist feminine deities of the Bronze Age; A post-industrial mythology, showing a kind of “Neolithic intelligence” to quote Claude Lévi-Strauss, who linked timelessness with the savage mind.

Batbataar Khurelbaatar, award-winning Mongolian artist who has recreated a lost world from the early 1900s in Mongolia.  Batnar, in a series aptly called Pinhole, captures a time long forgotten.   Another set of work he is creating focuses on Buddhist bells found in temples and touched for good luck.   Batbataar won first prize in the Beijing Biennale in 2010.   Batbataar's extraordinary talent combines beautiful calligraphy of Mongolian script, surprising colors and incredible detail to create historical monuments.

Denis Minh-Kim.  Denis presents a series of extremely powerful works on paper focused on Khmer boxing, waterfalls and kromas. In his signature pieces of Khmer boxing, Denis portrays two fighters, playing with
timeframes to create multiple images.  He is a silent witness to the struggle in the Cambodian culture.   His work is chaotic and tense, while at the same time, beautiful.

Nandin Erdene Budzagd ("Nandia"), one of the most creative young female artists from Mongolia.  This is Nandia's second international group show after her first grop show in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in June.  Nandia's collages are an incredible collection of magazine cuttings, mainly creating images of women - almost always with at least one physical defect.  She also has created a series of paintings providing glimpses into the public and personal lives of Mongolians.

Humans, who are still unable to detach themselves from worldly attachment, will always be affected by their own passions such as love, lust, greed, anger, etc. Somehow they will be blinded by these illusive wants which result in their happiness or, unfortunately, vice versa. This vicious circle will happen over and over again unless they can let go of their illusory world.
Nawin Biadklang, a renowned Thai artist and an art instructor at Silpakorn University, presents a new series of painting in the exhibition “Illusory Heaven” that deals with human subconciousness and their deep desire.

Somewhere in the Distance

H GALLERY BANGKOK

Somewhere in the Distance
Yvonne Hindle . Mit Jai Inn . Chat Jenchitr
September 8 – October 9 2011
Curated by Brian Curtin

Bangkok, Thailand. H Gallery is very pleased to announce an exhibition that explores aspects of the contemporary significance of painterly abstraction. Yvonne Hindle is influenced by Taoist concepts of time and flux and paints with a baroque yet romantic aesthetic. Mit Jai Inn creates canvases of subtly symbolic shapes and with gently rendered geometric surfaces, sometimes double-sided. And Chat Jenchitr abstracts metaphors from Buddhist philosophy with an often dazzling use of color.

Each of the artists in Somewhere in the Distance consciously engages an oscillation between the tangible and intangible, the referential and elusive, and the coded and esoteric. Further, each artist evokes a variety of lineages, art historical and otherwise. Both these aspects prompt consideration of the very notion of abstract painting within another oscillation: East and West. In this respect, Somewhere in the Distance offers a soft rebuke to the prevarications of ‘discourse’, art historical and otherwise, that would seek divisive categorizations and definitions. Instead this exhibition suggests possibilities for sensual and/or embodied experience as one means to engage visual knowledge for the contemporary, global, context.

Yvonne Hindle is a London-based artist and senior lecturer at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. She co-edited and contributed to the books Paint Theory Paint Practice (Lee Press) and Base and Awesome (Article Press and Ikon Gallery) and exhibits internationally. Mit Jai Inn is one of Thailand’s leading contemporary artists and has a long history of experimental art practice including The Chiang Mai Social Installation, a now legendary public art project that was a forerunner of relational aesthetics and so-called politico-aesthetic art in this country. Chat Jenchitr is an emergent artist based in Bangkok. He graduated from the Pratt Institute in New York in 2008 and held a solo show at H Gallery in 2010.

H GALLERY is open to the public daily between 10am and 6pm, except Tuesdays. The gallery is located at 201 Sathorn Soi 12 next to the Bangkok Bible College and Seminary and is within walking distance of the Surasak BTS Sky Train Station.

"Life is Elsewhere" at Tang Contemporary Art

Tang Contemporary Art presents  "Life is Elsewhere"
Curator: Beili Wang
Artists: Wang Weiwei, Zhu Xinyu, Ma Sibo, Ma Jiawei, Zhou Da and Han Bing

Date: September 1 – October 1, 2011

Tang Contemporary Art - Bangkok
Unit B-28 (Basement), Silom Galleria
919/1 Silom Road (Soi 19), Bangkok 10500 Thailand
Mon - Sat 11 am – 7 pm

OPENING RECEPTION: Tang Contemporary Art cordially invites you to the
Opening Reception on Thursday, September 1 2011, 6 pm.

EXHIBITION BACKGROUND

‘Life is Elsewhere’ is a phrase penned by the French poet Rimbaud. Every person lives their
own individual life, but at times there seems to be no ‘real’ sense of living life. Life is simply a
mode of being. It is something invisible that can transcend the borders of reality - shuttling back
and forth between the spirit world. It is precisely in this place, where exceptional occurrences
are experienced, which can then be depicted through the brush or in text. To have this kind of
displacement of personal experience is to have life elsewhere.

In the title of a Milan Kundera novel, there is a capacity to shape the sensitivity of a young artist’s
inner world. Time and space intertwine as reality and fantasy become enmeshed. Characters from
the stream of conscious are able to display the artist poet’s inner development.

Tang Contemporary Art is proud to present an exhibition of young artists born in the late 70s
and early 80s. They embody a generation who have only just recently left the campus and who
have started to find their feet in this present time. Living in the era of high-speed development of
Chinese society, they have witnessed the brain washing and cloning of their contemporaries due

to consumer culture. It appears that at this urgent moment we need to stop and think about the
question: Where is Life?

With Wang Weiwei’s paintings, life is a space where an unrestrained babble of nonsense can
unfold. An enchanted or possibly terrified little girl roams around a setting that is either night-time
or dawn. This image flits between coherent rationality and a dormant subconscious, a state of
reverie, self-catharsis and also a liberating dose of romanticism.

Zhu Xinyu’s paintings are constructed from life and memory. There is a disorder that arises from
both temporal and spatial notions overlapping and intertwining with one another. Perhaps life is
a process of ruin in relationship to time. We perceive dimensions perhaps by negotiating through
metaphysical aspects of space. Is this dark form of illumination an outline for a kind of summon?

Ma Sibo’s paintings often evoke the calm and serenity experienced in dreams. The paintings often
circulate an ‘Eden-like’ radiant glow of light. They are reminiscent of the tranquil moments you
feel only with the sweet intoxication of dreaming. It is a warm, but fragile composed moment that
perhaps reflects the true essence of life.

Ma Jiawei displays a more realistic observation of living. Using an inspired perspective, we see
cement pipelines in construction sites that we walk past almost everywhere. Far from being
beautiful, reality is shown to be an infinite series of sites, brick, and cement. However, through
the cement pipes there is an echo to a time of childhood, which leaves a lingering and wonderful
imprint on the mind.

Zhou Da uses his painting and installation work to map out life as a topology for the imagination.
He has developed an elaborate method to reproduce a wardrobe, some shelves, and his 29th
floor window with the view of the scenery outside. By mixing objects and elements of his life as
material for his paintings, we are presenting in front of us, a reading that leads us towards an
austere experience of realism. It is a work that perhaps reveals the lifestyle of today’s youth as an
archaeological record of the future.

Han Bing’s paintings are derived from a documentary about the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould.
The series of paintings solidify onto canvas the fleeting images taken from the screen in order
to allow us to contemplate these moments. They enable us to trace back the smallest and most
minute signs of doubt. The crystallization of the visual images of digital technology, enhances even
more our ability to re-examine the world and the possibilities of life elsewhere. More than simply a
projection of reality, they function as a source of illumination that enhance our field of vision.

Through these multiple viewpoints and individual experiences, these artists together open up a
transient dialogic space. They represent the youth who remain elusive to the dominant ideology.
Instead they emphasize the self-reflection of being through dreams, states of reverie, disorder, and
techniques of self-catharsis. They together evoke a search of ‘life elsewhere’ in a disconcerting
atmosphere of a society wrought by competition and materialism.

“Body Borders: Paintings” by Pinaree Sanpitak

100 Tonson Gallery cordially invites you to an opening reception of the solo paintings exhibition, which explores the plastic and metaphorical potential of artist’s motifs as objects for the contemplation of existence,Body Borders: Paintings  by Pinaree Sanpitak, the leading contemporary Thai artist who has an individual creature with Female symbol “Breasts” in the delicate, sensible, and passionate meaning, on Thursday August 25th , 2011 at 7 pm onwards.

Three of Bangkok’s most established contemporary art venues, the Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, H Gallery, and 100 Tonson Gallery, are very pleased to announce an ambitious collaborative showcase of Pinaree Sanpitak’s recent works. Two interactive installations and a series of paintings reveal new interests and developments in Pinaree’s on-going exploration of the symbolic and experiential dimensions of corporeality.

Pinaree states, “The body, which has been a continuing focus in my work for the past 20 years - explores sensory experience and perception. Recently, my son’s interest in pursuing studies in fashion design has led me to look at the body through the ideas of adornment: How the body is epitomized or minimized. What matters to me is how the body becomes a site of transit, contemplation and understanding. The body - part or whole - ponders, wonders and challenges.”

The exhibition will be on view from August 25th – September 25th , 2011 ( every Thursday – Sunday, 11 am – 7 pm)

Argentine Art in Bangkok at Thavibu Gallery

Argentine Art in Bangkok

23 to 29 September, 2011
Thavibu Gallery, Bangkok

BUENOS AIRES, July, 2011 - The show “Argentine Art in Bangkok” will be held from 23 to 29 September, 2011 at Thavibu Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand. This show presents the works of different Argentine contemporary artists selected and represented by the international Argentine curator Andrés Bardon.

The present selection of artworks brings for the first time to Thailand some of the Argentine new figurative art. Figuration, as an expressive media in painting, has been developed in different ways without ever losing the symbolic value of the artwork. In its more contemporary version, this value needs a deeper approach
of the spectator and takes him to an ambiguous, magical and also a daily world according to our contemporary life.

Instead of the new figuration existing in most of the Latin American countries, where the subject and the colors vibrate to the rhythm of aboriginal roots, Argentine contemporary figuration proposes a mysterious look, without a doubt a proper sign of a country basically created by European immigration.

This exposition will show the works of Ricardo Celma, Maria Cristina Elorriaga, Nicolas Hernandorena, Leticia Jenquel, Paula Rivero and Nancy Torre.

Andrés Bardon, General Director of ARTECLASICA, the Modern and Contemporary Art Fair of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is also the curator of international exhibitions since 1998 and represents several artists mostly from Argentina at important shows and expositions of Europe, Asia and the Americas.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“Save the Forest”
By Somboon Muneewangsakul
21st September – 5th November, 2011
To be president by
M.R.Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Governor of Bangkok
Wednesday 21st September, 2011 at 6.00pm-8pm.
At 2nd Floor Sombat Permpoon Gallery

Sombat Permphoon Gallery is proud to announce its latest exhibition “Save the Forest” by Somboon Muneewangsakul. The inspiration behind this exhibition comes directly from nature and all its wild, untouched beauty. No embellishments of the imagination have been added to the artists’ portrayal; it is all natural, depicted as it has been seen.

The artist’s reason for this series of his work comes from the realization that forests existed before life as we know it did, and is the beginning of all existence. It is the source and constant of all other life forms, from enabling the fragile ecosystem we live in, to creating oxygen for us to breathe, and water to drink. Humans have benefited the most from the forest, without any need for compensation, but yet we continually abuse nature, through incessant logging and replacing trees growing in their their natural environment with trees that we think will be more beneficial for our monetary ventures. Somboon would like to create awareness and bring the jungle’s plight to the public, hoping to wake the conscience of the public in the necessity of jungles to our existence. He believes human beings are the only ones that can conserve, and save, the jungle, and in turn, ourselves.

ป่ายามบ่ายที่ห้วยขาแข้ง.2011. oil on canvas.100x150cm.

For over 30 years, Mr. Somboon Muneewangsakul is the creator behind art works at notable venues around Thailand and beyond including, Le Royal Meridien Hotel, Grand Hyatt Erawan, Dusit Thani, Dusit Resort & Polo Club in Cha-Am, Royal Paradise Hotel in Phuket, Nikko Manila Garden Hotel in Manila, Philipines, Cabinet Assembly Hall at Government House, New Bumrungrad Hospital, Thai Airways International Co., Ltd...Etc,

NERDS AGAINST GIRLS by DANIEL SEWELL

NERDS AGAINST GIRLS by DANIEL SEWELL
ART EXHIBITION: MIX-MEDIA (DIGITAL ART/ SPRAYING/ PRINTING)
Exhibition Date: 2 - 4 September 2011, 7PM - 11PM
Opening Night: Friday 2 September 2011, 7PM

Artist Profile:
Artist Daniel Sewell was born in New York in 1978 to a genetic engineer father and piano teacher mother. What followed seemed natural in that Sewell’s artistic interests involve theme and variation/mutation, a laboratory of instruments to make images, and finally the combination of Serialism with a discipline of practice. Sewell lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand.

Exhibition Profile:
‘Nerds against girls’ brings together various styles from artist Daniel Sewell to narrate a story of Science’s stranglehold on Mother Nature. This story is told through pictorially representing a range of activities, from playing hero-obsessed video games and role-play, to mining and agriculture and the power struggle of those resources.
